Dawud Anyabwile
Creator/Illustrator/Co-Writer

"As far back as I can recall I had an appetite to create.” Emmy Award Winner, Dawud Anyabwile, formerly known as David Sims has been drawing his own characters since childhood. This Philadelphia native says that his earliest creative inspirations came from his older brothers, his comic book collection, his father’s extensive book collection on Black history and listening to music. Upon entering high school, Dawud abandoned his interest in mainstream comic books to focus his creative energies into the upcoming sub-culture of hip hop and fine arts. The fascination of graffiti, DJ’ing and fine tuning his basic drawing skills as an art major only further refined Anyabwile’s focus on becoming an artist for a living.

“I always knew that I wanted to run my own business but I did not know what kind of artist I wanted to be. There were so many directions that I could go into. I never thought of doing comic books full time nor animation. They seemed like hobbies to me not career goals. Illustration always seemed like the logical route for me.” Dawud went on to build a city wide reputation as an airbrush artist which eventually led to the creation of one of the most popular independent comic books of the 90’s and beyond. The release of “Brotherman: Dictator of Discipline” was a rewarding experience for Anyabwile but it also was extremely arduous. “We faced many challenges from racial ignorance and resistance within the comic book industry to the stresses of traveling around the country to distribute and promote our books on our own . . . all the while I was the only artist doing the work of a full production crew.” These challenges were overcome by tremendous leaps and bounds and paved the way for a new generation of young black artist-entrepreneurs who were inspired to follow the blueprint that was laid down by Anyabwile and his brothers.

Guy Sims
Co-creator/Principal Writer

Writing is such a powerful medium. It not only brings voice to ideas, it also has the ability to misshape them. Born from solitude, it delivers expressions to the world, to the few and to the one.- GAS

Guy has authored two of the earliest publication on the subject of Kwanzaa. The first was “The Kwanzaa Handbook” (1981) and the second, “The Kwanzaa Kids Learn the Seven Principles” (1984). An avid poet and writer of short fiction, Guy has completed a collection of new American Tall Tales, Rife Powers and Other Too Tall Tales, has a screenplay currently under solicitation, and will complete his first novel, Livin’ Just A Little this fall. Like most creative spirits, it is hard to pinpoint when he wanted to add writing to his life experiences but his earliest inspiration was the audio version of Richard Wright’s Black Boy, shared with him by his father. “After hearing that record, I thought I wanted to tell stories like that. I immediately read as much of Wright’s work as possible. ” With time came more writers and genres to explore: Shakespeare, Baldwin, Benet, McKay, Vonnegut, and Walker (to name a very few). Some of his contemporary influences and motivators are the late Bebe Moore Campbell, E. Lynn Harris, and Walter Moseley. “When I think about what influenced me with the Brotherman series, I am drawn to the works of the two Chesters… Chester Himes and Chester Gould. Their
stylizing of characterizations, settings, and tight stories continue to impress.

No More Mr. Nice Guy: The Undoing of an African American, How I Survived a Corporate Career Derailment
by James Alston

BookSurge

In clear prose, No More Mr. Nice Guy by James E. Alston draws extensive conclusions on race relations in corporate America. In this professional biography, he writes with a heartfelt conviction from an insider’s perspective as a top restaurant executive for over thirty years. An analysis that is well overdue, the author outlines the instances and impact of evasive, covert discriminatory practices of managers and coworkers on all levels of employment.

James E. Alston tells it like it is and how it has been for thirty years in the food and beverage industry. This professional autobiography spans three decades’ experience of a top African American executive and points an accusing finger at corporate America to remind us that we have a long road ahead of us. The challenges in the workplace are clear.

This professional autobiography deals with the psychosocial dynamics in a workplace environment and how the impact affects minorities and ordinary people. His subordinates, fellow managers, and executives we meet through this text teach invaluable lessons on how to handle undue and inappropriate pressure, tenacity, and how each of us—no matter their color or creed—has a breaking point. Pushing all the right buttons, this true story is filled with empathy and powerful directives on how to choose battles in order to win the war. Fearless and without irony, this sociological analysis of an African American climbing the corporate ladder in order to hit the glass ceiling that held a painful reminder of how little has changed in the past century. This tell-all serves as a prophetic history lesson filled with the backlash of sexism and corporate color games. Ultimately, a lesson on grace and how to survive, minorities and non-minorities are given a rare glimpse into just how unfair the corporate environment and workplace can be.

Besides sharing the problems of living in a deteriorating building, the thirteen tenants at 666 Cypress Avenue all have a very deep and bitter hatred towards one another. As temperatures rise in their South Bronx neighborhood, so does their frustration with the building's broken doors, malfunctioning elevator, rat infestation, and skyrocketing rent increases. To make matters worse, the blazing heat is also sending everyone's animosity to its boiling point.

Then a new tenant arrives, taking up shelter in the last vacant apartment. Highly intelligent and extraordinarily beautiful, Raven Thorn blows in like a much-needed summer breeze. Unleashing her charisma, she slowly gains the trust and admiration of all the tenants except one.

Crystal Bright, a crack-addicted young woman, looks like the poster child for everything that's wrong with society; but beneath her addiction lies a heart of gold and a very intelligent mind. Sensing a darker and much more sinister side to Raven, Crystal realizes that she must act fast before a fuse is lit that could ignite a bloodbath between the fragile building's hostile tenants.

Biography
Ginny Albert has been writing but years, but in 1978 a particular novel led her Egypt to gather research. It was an amazing cultural awakening. Two highlights of the trip were climbing The Great Pyramid at 5:00 a.m. – a thrillingly frigid experience; and a special kinship with the Egyptian people. She also got a surprise when she returned home; she discovered that she was pregnant. It was years before she was able to get back on track with writing. There were several starts and stops.

Finally, in 2003 Ginny began writing Which Man, which was published in 2007. In 2008 Which Man was made required reading at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln by Dr. Kwakiutl Dreher. This distinction led to the novel being on the shelves of Georgia State University in late 2008; it is also on line at such university book stores as Clark AU, Yale, Spelman, Tuskegee, etc. In addition to on-air interviews on two People TV shows -- Book Talk, and Mills Connection, LLC, Ginny was interviewed for article in Georgia State University’s student newspaper The Signal in January 2009.

After several successful book-signings in 2008, Which Man has been chosen as the April 2009 read for a local Atlanta book club. Additionally, two Atlanta-area libraries have scheduled book-signings for early 2009.

Ginny has completed another novel entitled Love at Shadow’s Edge, and is beginning work on a new one.

Also an artist, Ginny is founder of GinnyArt (www.cafepress.com/ginnyart). Her artistic designs adorn her own tees, known as Chic Shirts. On October 18, 2008, her ink drawings garnered 3rd Prize at Smyrna’ Georgia’s Spirit Walk Exhibit. As in 2008, her artwork will be on display at The Georgia Women Lawyer’s Association in March 2009, as well, and is being considered for entry in an exhibit being sponsored by Trees Atlanta. The intent ultimately is to display the work in exhibits nationally, and internationally.

But, by far, the most exciting and heart-felt experience she’s ever had was being present at the birth of her first grandson, Jason Wesley. At four pounds, and a month early, doctors determined that he would probably be a bit slow. But, God had other plans for little Jason, who is smart and thriving more everyday. He is the light of her life.

TwistTwist
by Angie Jennings

Spine Publishing

Are you looking for the next book character who, with her comical honesty and snappy comebacks, reminds you of one of your best girlfriends?

Meet Sharin Downs.

If you enjoyed the journeys of Tracy Ellison in Omar Tyree’s “Flyy Girl” and “For the Love of Money” and Venus Johnston in Trisha R. Thomas’s “Nappily” series, you’ll enjoy the rollercoaster ride which is the life of Sharin Downs.

Like many people right now, Sharin has experienced a series of dead-end interviews and job layoffs in the Washington, DC area.  “I couldn’t believe they’d laid me off only thirty minutes ago and were about to chow down on seafood and steak,” she said after seeing her former employers walking to McCormick and Schmick after canning her. Her love life has been moving at the pace of rush hour traffic on a holiday weekend as her relationship – for lack of better words – with Alphonso, an Army guy, flounders. To top it off, Alphonso leaves the military out of fear of being deployed to Iraq – and leaves Sharin for Atlanta.  Of course Sharin’s left to wonder, “Is this the best my life can get?” This question activates her fight-or-flight response and causes her to pack her bags and flee the nation’s capital – for Atlanta, coincidentally – only to find out that her real issues – and Alphonso – are seemingly inescapable.

No wonder she’s depressed.

With the help of her psychiatrist, Dr. Bailey, and her friends – new and old – can Sharin make sense of her personal and professional lives? Find out in “Twist” (spine publishing, $12.95), the debut novel by Angie L. Jennings.

Pass this email along to your book club members so you all can order your autographed copies today. Also, visit www.callmetwist.com to listen to audio chapters from the novel.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Angie L. Jennings is an advocate of writing quickly and not giving the demonic self-critic the chance to set in and dig its claws into her back. With the instruction of a university seminar, the first time novelist followed a rigorous schedule—writing two hours a day for six days a week—to complete her manuscript in a month and a half. It was almost two years later that she was able to see the rough draft objectively and self-publish her first book. Jennings is an adjunct English professor with colleges and universities in the Washington, DC area and runs aiellejai (pronounced A-L-J), a communications firm.

Where There's Smoke
by Terra Little

Urban Books

Sixteen years after the fact, Alec Avery gets an unwelcome blast from his drug-dealing, street-running past that turns his life upside down. Back in the day, he was known as “Smoke” and Anne Phillips was one of his customers. So how did they end up with a teenage son together? You do the math. Dollars make sense, but Anne didn’t always have the money to pay for what she wanted. Now Alec is paying the price.

These days he’s a military vet and a well-respected high school teacher. Just about the last thing he expects to encounter is a son he never knew he had and a bunch of foolishness that he thought he was done with. The boy - Isaiah - is out of control, experimenting with drugs and running with a rough crowd, and the last thing he expects to encounter is a long-lost father who is hell-bent on making his presence felt in a very meaningful way.

Before long, Smoke has no choice but to come out of hibernation to right some wrongs, starting with the thugs who don’t want to turn his son loose. They didn’t count on old school meeting new school, which is their first mistake. And Alec didn’t count on drooling over the woman his son’s mother has become, but whether or not he’s making a mistake remains to be seen.

Contemporary fiction and just a hint of urbane drama bump heads as two people are forced to step outside their comfort zones and acknowledge the dark past they share, so they can snatch a clueless teenager back from the point of no return. But while one long-overdue relationship is taking shape and gaining substance, another long-forgotten one is gathering steam and sparking flames. Two was always company, now is three a crowd?

Black Mahler: The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Story
by Charles Elford

Grosvenor House Publishing Limited

A ‘must-read’, Black Mahler: The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Story dramatically brings to life the true story of all but forgotten, English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912).

Born to a white mother and black father and raised in the London suburbs, Coleridge-Taylor’s epic choral trilogy ‘The Song of Hiawatha’ makes this funny, generous and modest young man a worldwide sensation overnight.

Coleridge-Taylor made three high-profile tours of America (1904, 1906 & 1910) and was hailed a cultural hero by the African American community to whom slavery was a very recent memory. He had the unprecedented honor of a private audience with President Roosevelt and was the first person of African descent ever to conduct a white orchestra in the US.

Black Mahler: The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Story is an evocative and vital dramatization of the man’s life, colorfully told for our generation through the recollections of those closest to him - his discovery; his student days at the Royal College of Music; the disastrous sale of his biggest hit for just 15 guineas (about $30); his colleagues, friends and family; his sparkling classical and ‘pop’ music; his stardom; his poverty; his humor; his Pan-African work; his brush with a certain ‘unsinkable’ trans-Atlantic liner and his tragically premature death aged just 37.

The themes of artistic rivalry, ‘selling out’, overwork, international stardom, perfectionism, financial struggle, love, grief, the quest for acceptance, prejudice and relentless struggle make this modern rendition an inspirational and timeless tale for the 21st Century.

Ever cheerful and so loved, he changed the lives of countless thousands. His varied influences echoed down through the ages and will continue on.

He united a world.

Visit www.blackmahler.com for more information - reviews, endorsements, author interview, pictures, historical timeline, links etc).

Author Bio
On 7th April 2004 an article by Norman Lebrecht (BBC broadcaster, award-winning novelist and Assistant Editor to the London Evening Standard) marking the release of Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto was published. It likened the success of ‘Hiawatha’ in the late 1890s/early 1900s to the success of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s musicals today. But on reading the article, Charles Elford was surprised that he knew nothing of Coleridge-Taylor despite the name’s vague familiarity. His interest piqued, he started to dig and hasn’t looked back. Not managing to trace the two ‘definitive’ biographies, the principal sources for Black Mahler: The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Story were the biographies by Coleridge-Taylor’s wife and daughter.

During the course of his research and writing, Mr Elford developed a huge affection for his gentle, clever, modest and funny protagonist and doesn’t believe that Coleridge-Taylor deserves to be, or to remain, forgotten. He felt duty-bound to remain loyal to the truth and sincerely hopes that Black Mahler: The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Story will in some small way, renew interest in this inspirational and influential man who only ever saw himself as the English musician who lent his race a voice.

Charles Elford trained originally as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama. He lives in Whitstable, Kent and works for a charity that provides supported housing and associated services to vulnerable single homeless people and those at risk of homelessness. He is currently revising his screenplay adaptation of Black Mahler: The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Story. Norman Lebrecht said ‘It’s an incredibly human story which would translate extremely well to film.’

Although many other wonderful things have been said of this book (you can read some of them at www.blackmahler.com) Mr Elford tells us the most gratifying commendation came from Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s own grandson who, in October 2008, said ‘...It was wonderful reading and towards the end I just could not put it down. The imagination on Charles Elford’s part was incredible; because everything was so absolutely accurate in every detail. I wondered where he got his information from. It was more than just a pleasure, it was like going back in time.’

Finding Grace on a Less Traveled Road: A Cancer Doctor Reflects on Living and Dying
by R. Elliot Willis MD
iUniverse

How should we live, and how should we die? Finding grace in life and death is an eternal quest for us all.

Finding Grace on a Less Traveled Road is both an autobiography, and a biography. It is a book that takes the reader on a journey through the life of a cancer physician who learns early, as a child, about the true meaning of life, death, hardship, and suffering. It is through the author’s own understanding of what it means to overcome incomprehensible odds that the reader comes to understand the true meaning of how we should live, and the gracious manner in which we should die.

This book is a firsthand account of growing up poor and gifted in one of the toughest environments in America during the turbulent 1960’s. It is an inspirational and unforgettable story of determination and personal triumph. This poignant memoir describes the author’s passage from his traumatic childhood in a large family living in Chicago, through medical school education, significant early work in AIDS research during the onset of the epidemic, and, finally, a successful career treating cancer.

Finding Grace on a Less Traveled Road embraces a range of American issues and ideas. It affirms our belief in the possibility of achieving goals through persistent work, no matter the starting point. More, the book illuminates the predicament of the poor. It deals with so-called “giftedness,” portrays the true nature of the worst pandemic in history, and helps demystify the care of the terminally ill, and interprets society’s role in all of these arenas.

The author weaves the events of his life poignantly in-and-out of the life events of his family, friends, patients, and colleagues, revealing how the events in all of their lives stand as a testament to the fact that we humans are more than just flesh and blood. We are mind, body and spirit. In the end, the physical and emotional hardship the author endures crystallizes his faith, compassion, and skill as a physician. The biographical accounts of those he cares for, and those he loves, provide an inspiring spectrum of genuine heroism, and a vision of what the ministry of medicine should be.

R. Elliot Willis attended a high school for gifted students, earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry at Northwestern University, and then earned an MD at St. Louis’s Washington University School of Medicine. He is the Chief of Medical Oncology at Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

Praise for The Beauty Within
In THE BEAUTY WITHIN, Ms. Frierson has created real characters whose reactions to life, stress and trauma is reminiscent of real-life struggles. This is a story that many will be able to relate too as you run the gamut of emotions through the progression of this story.

THE BEAUTY WITHIN is a quick and enjoyable read. I would recommend giving a copy to the women you know who are having self-esteem issues, especially if they are weight related.

Get Me Out of My Way!
by Dre McCray

Black Forest Press

Everyone has the innate ability to have ultimate success in life. Your experiences, choices and effort determine if you will attain that success. This book will help you discover who you are, what your strengths and weaknesses are and how to manage your weaknesses while capitalizing on your strengths.

This is not a step by step or principles book because quite frankly most of us already know the steps, habits and principles. It is a collection of insights that delves into the intricacies that hinders you from taking your life to its highest level.

A major reason people do not prosper in life is they make excuses and do not take responsibility for their choices. Mediocrity embraces people who abandon holding them selves accountable for their outcome.

The reason people do not take responsibility is that it is very painful to take a realistic look at oneself. The vast majority of people believe that they do not have any control over their circumstances and that they can not overcome their environment and experiences. So they use blame and excuses as a defense mechanism to protect them from the truth.

Utilizing real life practical examples this book takes you through the process of defining and overcoming the roadblocks to ultimate success in your life.

Holding Pattern
by Jeffery Renard Allen

Graywolf Press

The world of Jeffery Renard Allen’s stunning short-story collection is a place like no other. A recognizable city, certainly, but one in which a man might sprout wings or copper pennies might fall from the skies onto your head. Yet these are no fairy tales. The hostility, the hurt, is all too human.

The protagonists circle each other with steely determination: a grandson taunts his grandmother, determined to expose her secret past; for years, a sister tries to keep a menacing neighbor away from her brother; and in the local police station, an officer and prisoner try to break each other’s resolve.

In all the stories, Allen calibrates the mounting tension with exquisite timing, in mesmerizing prose that has won him comparisons with Joyce and Faulkner. Holding Pattern is a captivating collection by a prodigiously talented writer.

Order in the House-God’s heart concerning the marriage covenant is the remedy for strong healthy marriages.  It is an easy read Spiritual/ self-help book.  It addresses the perplexing issues of today’s couples.  It deals with the purpose and intention of the marriage covenant.  Difficult questions are answered such as, why your spouse, with all of his or her faults, is perfect for you.  God removes all the guesswork by making it very practical and clear in understanding your roles as husband and wife.  He walks you step-by-step through the process of how to fulfill those roles and how to connect with each other for purpose.  Additionally, He reveals poor choices that couples often make providing the enemy an entryway into their marriages.  By using the author’s vulnerability and weaknesses, couples are able to locate themselves so that God can lead them to a place of dominating their domain of marriage.  Areas where the enemy once had a stronghold, causing her marriage to suffer and nearly end in divorce, are revealed in detail.

“Order in the House,” reveals how men and women communicate differently.  It explains the importance of meeting the needs of your spouse and not focusing on your own needs.  At the same time, how to get your needs met (by God) until your spouse’s change comes.  It teaches how to take on a new mind-set and fight God’s way, not the world’s way, which sets your marriage on a course of divorce.  It dispels the lies of the enemy, using the word of God, that would cause individuals to believe that same sex marriages are ok.  Most importantly, it reveals how one individual can change the dynamics of his or her marriage.  It explores various issues such as; the needs of men and women, using sex as a weapon, allowing family and friends to be involved in your daily affairs, selfishness and much more.

by
Vermel Kinmon

Reflections is a story about how a web of secrets, lies, and deception ushers a cherished bond between two friends into an unspoken love affair.

Good friends are hard to find. That’s what Tiana used to believe until she met Darrell. For the last five years he has been the big brother and best friend she has needed to help her cope with her troubled past and her shoulder to cry on during the obstacles of the present. At least that’s what her mind tells her, but her heart is yearning for more.

On the outside everything seems to be going well in Darrell’s life. He has a great career and has been in a long term relationship with a beautiful therapist for the past three years, but on the inside things are not so pretty. Darrell’s close friendship with Tiana is causing drama within his household and havoc on his emotions.

“Were just friends”, used to be a truthful statement for both Tiana and Darrell, but with the intensity of a blossoming relationship for Tiana and the mounting tension of Darrell’s, proves to make that statement an old figment of their imagination.

War of the Bloods in My Veins: A Street Soldier's March Toward Redemption
by Dashaun Jiwe Morris
Scribner

"WAR OF THE BLOODS IN MY VEINS: A Street Soldier's March to Redemption" (Scribner, April 2008), a memoir by Dashaun Jiwe Morris, is a rare and jarringly honest look into the emptiness and realities that drive so many youth to join gangs. A wake up call about the conditions and circumstances that provoke and perpetuate the cycle of violent crime, Jiwe shows us why food, shelter, and clothing are not enough to keep our kids from dying in the streets.

Told in graphic detail, Jiwe draws us in, to walk alongside him as he takes us on his painful journey as a member of the East Coast Bloods. By age eleven, he had encountered gang warfare at its peak. Lured in by fear, the promise of protection and acceptance, he witnessed stabbings, beatings, shootings, and the destructive force of drugs. As a teenager, Jiwe excelled as a player on his high school football team, earning a full athletic scholarship to Delaware State University. At the same time, he was a full-fledged gang banger navigating the constant horrors of the streets that regularly claimed the lives of his friends and family members.

At age 25, Jiwe, worn weary of gang culture, saw a way to reclaim his life and potentially save others through the power of the written word. At times painfully sad, "WAR OF THE BLOODS IN MY VEINS" is ultimately an inspiring testimony of hope, about humanity in the midst of evil, and turning tragedy into triumph. The book is filled with lessons for the next generation of youngsters coming up about the choices so many of them face to survive the streets, and the maturity and courage required to choose a better life.

"WAR OF THE BLOODS IN MY VEINS" is also a story of war-both the unbearable inner turmoil endured with, seemingly, no hope of relief, and the unending battle raging out of control on America's streets that claims the lives of loved ones every day. Complete with child soldiers, unspeakable violence, and eventual salvation, Jiwe exemplifies a man coming to terms with the lost boy he was and his transformation into a man with a new
direction for his life.

A major initiative in Jiwe's personal healing and redemption, "WAR OF THE BLOODS IN MY VEINS" teaches us that people can change-for the better. It is a cry to his brothers that gang life is not only mental illness, but also suicide. It is Jiwe's personal gift to youth, parents, and all of society intended to educate them about the perilous realities of the gang lifestyle, and given with the hope of preventing more kids from falling victim to its violence.

Yellow Moon
by Jewell Parker Rhodes

Atria Books

A jazzman, a wharf worker, a prostitute, all murdered. Wrists punctured, their bodies impossibly drained of blood. What connects them? Why are they rising as ghosts?

Marie Levant, the great-great granddaughter of the Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau knows better than anyone New Orleans’ brutal past—the legacy of slavery, poverty, racism and sexism—and as a Doctor at Charity Hospital’s ER, she treats its current victims.

When she sleeps, she dreams of blood. Rain, never-ending.

The river is rising and the yellow moon warns of an ancient evil—an African vampire—wazimamoto —a spirit created by colonial oppression.

The struggle becomes personal, as the wazimamoto is intent on destroying her and all the Laveau descendents. Marie fights to protect her daughter, lover, and herself from the wazimamoto’s seductive assault on both body and spirit.

Echoing with the heartache and triumph of the African American experience, the soulful rhythms of jazz, and the horrors of racial oppression, Yellow Moon gives us an unforgettable heroine—sexy, vulnerable, and mysterious—in Marie Levant, while it powerfully evokes a city on the brink of catastrophe.

Part two of the New Orleans trilogy that began with Voodoo Season—magical realist fiction that takes the legend of the voodoo priestess Marie Laveau, as imagined by Jewell Parker Rhodes in the bestselling Voodoo Dreams, into the present day.

Barack Obama for Beginners: An Essential Guide
by Bob Neer
For Beginners Books

Barack Obama for Beginners: An Essential Guide is the fastest and most reliable way to get up to speed on the Democratic candidate for President of the United States. It condenses the personal and political history of the first African-American nominee for our nation's highest office to provide a complete introduction to the Senator from Illinois. The text covers the candidate's family history and life experiences and beliefs, and discusses his strengths and weaknesses. Entertaining illustrations enliven the reading experience and highlight important details. Barack Obama For Beginners keeps the focus on the candidate and his record — accomplishments and missteps, praise and criticism — to allow readers to draw their own conclusions.

Barack Obama for Beginners: An Essential Guide is a true look at his life and the events that have brought him to the doorstep of the White House. It chronicles his journeys from childhood, taking an important look at the pivotal moments that have made him who he is today. A great example of how early on Obama’s hopes for a bright future began, can be seen in the following passage about his high school years, “He could see the possibility of a better society, however – he longed for it – and began to think about how he and others might work proactively to bring about change,” offering the reader a glimpse at the process the candidate went through to become the motivated individual that he is today.

In this time of political urgency, it is pivotal to educate ourselves and understand the basis of change, and those who are promising it. While time (and voters) will tell who is ultimately elected in these coming few months, Barack Obama is certainly a man to remember as a fresh element in a time of stagnancy in the American political system.

This Beneath The Sky
a Novel
by Roberta Hughes Wright

This Beneath The Sky, a romantic, historical novel, is exciting, vexatious and titillating. The primary characters are Nelson Morris and George Hatter, close friends who grew up in the late 1800s in Victorian Britain.

Nelson's family was wealthy and had survived the effects of England's political and social changes. George's family fortune had declined dramatically because of an agriculture depression. Both families were affected by the highly infectious diseases prevalent in London at that time.

After much deliberation, Nelson and his father and George and his father left the 19th century English life and moved to Madagascar, a mystical, magical, mysterious island "at the bottom of the world".

The author has provided the readers with authentic descriptions of the native population, of the strange monkey-like lemurs, of the masses of flowers and the rain forests, of the ancient villages and bridges and moats, of the sitting Royalty and local politicians .

Complex and exciting are the lives of Nelson and George and their loves and lust and the beauty of Margrette, of the interval in Paris and the devastating scenes of Sarah, and her escort Gaston at Club LeGai. The flashbacks to Senegal, Africa and Paris, France will be a great surprise for the readers.

Read about the child who was alternately loved and unloved but who learned to be a man when he was introduced to the awesome beauty of Isle Ste Marie. and to the teaching of Masu, his uncle. Join us for the adventure.
